People often turn to art for comfort in times of great stress and anxiety. This past year, the art I turned to happened to be musicals. Non-English language musicals. German musicals, mostly, with a couple French ones thrown in as well. So, when asked to pick a semester-long topic that we would be creating art for, culminating in a book of some of our best work...well, I knew what I would be focusing on. It was an incredibly privilege to do a true deep dive into these various pieces of theatre, to examine their visual motifs and the beauty of their staging, costuming, and lighting.
The shows highlighted in this book are Tanz der Vampire, Elisabeth das Musical, Mozart! das Musical, and Notre Dame de Paris. These various pieces were created with a variety of mediums, but primarily ink, watercolor, marker, acrylic paint, collage, and a few digital alterations as well.
